What is World Hunger Relief?

Started in 2007 as World Hunger Relief Week, Yum! and its brands (KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell) created World Hunger Relief to highlight and drive action in the movement to end world hunger by increasing awareness, raising money for United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and other hunger relief agencies around the globe, and encouraging volunteerism.

Since World Hunger Relief launched in 2007, more than one million of the Company’s employees, franchisees and their families have volunteered more than 21 million hours to aid hunger relief efforts in communities worldwide. The effort has raised nearly $85 million for WFP and other hunger relief organizations and is helping to provide over 350 million meals and save the lives of millions of people in remote corners of the world. In January 2010, Yum! Brands was honored to be named WFP’s Partner of the Year at the World Economic Forum annual meeting at Davos. Additionally, PR Week awarded World Hunger Relief with top honors as the “Cause–Related Campaign of the Year 2010”.

Our core philanthropic mission is to feed people in need. Yum! and our brands have been committed to fighting hunger for more than a decade by donating over 125 million pounds of food, with a value of over $500 million, to those at risk of hunger in the United States. Yum! also has been the primary sponsor of the Dare to Care Food Bank in Louisville, KY for nine years, and has donated nearly $8 million to this local agency.

We understand, however, that hunger has no borders. Hunger affects nearly one billion people around the world every day. As the world’s largest restaurant company, addressing the issue of hunger on a global scale is a natural fit. We reached out to the world’s largest hunger relief agency, and subsequently, our senior executives made visits to WFP operations in Sudan and Guatemala. After seeing WFP in action, we were compelled to create an unprecedented, globally-focused effort to raise awareness about hunger and raise funds to help feed the hungry poor by donating to WFP. With your help, we can make a huge impact and help end hunger around the world for the second year. Together we can help significantly in bridging the gap between hunger and hope.

What is the World Food Programme (WFP)?

WFP is the largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide. Each year, on average, WFP feeds more than 90 million people in more than 70 countries.

WFP’s life-saving programs provide safety nets and mother-child health programs in extreme situations. They are not just providing a hand out, but rather a hand up:

  • helping villages and communities lift themselves from chronic malnutrition by helping build infrastructures (roads, bridges, schools, medical clinics) in exchange for food.
  • providing food and resources to build self-sustaining communities in the most impoverished corners of the world.
  • provide school feeding, using as platform for nutritional interventions.

Funds donated by customers during World Hunger Relief will directly support the greatest needs of WFP's food relief programs in the least developed nations around the world. The Yum!
