Yum! Canada Uses Social Media to Raise Funds for World Hunger!
To support our World Hunger Relief efforts, Yum! Canada developed a creative fundraising method utilizing the popular social media site Facebook. The team launched Food for Food, a Facebook application that allows users around the world to send virtual gifts in the shape of iconic KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell menu items!
Each virtual gift on Facebook (available at http://apps.facebook.com/yumrestaurants/) costs only $1 CDN ($.95 USD), with 100% of the proceeds donated directly to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). Gift recipients receive a posting of the chosen icon on their Facebook wall, along with an optional message from the gift-giver. The icon posting displays individual support for the WHR efforts and helps drive additional traffic to the donation site!
“Food for Food is a great way to raise funds for our World Hunger Relief campaign by making it easy for millions of Facebook users to make a difference,” says David, Senior Marketing Manager for PH Canada, who is leading the Canadian fundraising efforts this year. “Each virtual gift purchased will help the WFP provide actual meals for those in need, so you could say that Yum! is using social media to achieve social good.”
The Food for Food Facebook application was created by Mindblossom (www.mindblossom.com), a digital marketing agency that currently works with the Canadian Pizza Hut and Taco Bell businesses. Mindblossom generously donated the numerous development hours required to build Food for Food as their contribution to Yum!’s World Hunger Relief efforts.
Food for Food is available online now, and the application has already received very positive PR in the Canadian media around Yum!’s use of social media to raise money for a good cause. Given that greater awareness of this application will ultimately mean higher donation levels for the WFP, all Yum! employees are encouraged to support this initiative by visiting http://apps.facebook.com/yumrestaurants/ and purchasing a few Yum! Facebook gifts for their families and friends!
